Curriculum Vitae


Prof. Dr. Thomas Söding, born in 1956, has been Professor of New Testament Studies at the Faculty of Catholic Theology at Ruhr University Bochum since 2008 and Senior Professor since 2023. He was previously Professor of Biblical Theology at the University of Wuppertal from 1993 to 2008. He received his academic training by studying Catholic Theology, German Studies and History at the University of Münster. In 1979 he completed his diploma in theology and in 1980 his first state examination in German studies. His dissertation on faith in Mark was accepted in Münster in 1985 and his habilitation thesis on the commandment of love in Paul in 1991. His work in research and teaching focuses on the exegesis of the Gospels, Pauline theology, the theory and practice of scriptural interpretation and ecumenism.

Memberships: Thomas Söding is a member of numerous academic and church bodies, including the Academy of Sciences and Arts of North Rhine-Westphalia. From 2004-2014, he was a member of the International Theological Commission at the Vatican. He is an advisor to the Faith Commission of the German Bishops' Conference and was a consultant to the Pontifical Council (now: Dicastery) for the New Evangelization until 2023. He is a permanent guest in the Chamber Network of the EKD. He is Vice-President of the Central Committee of German Catholics and of the Synodal Path. He is a theological expert of the World Synod of the Catholic Church 2021-2024.
